Economy

TEACHER: So my students are working on a unit on the economy, and we're tying the terminology of goods and services into a concept that they're already familiar with our classroom management system. We give out class cash for things the students do as an act of service to our classroom community, such as sharing with a peer, raising their hand, or cleaning up the classroom. It's a way for us to reward them for their positive behaviors that we'd like to see more of. At the end of the week, they can use their class cash to buy goods from our classroom store. I have one student who's working on one-to-one correspondence and number recognition of the numbers 1 through 3. This student is our class storekeeper. And since he's nonverbal, he uses the communication devices to let the other students know how much they owe for the item they've chosen from the store, matching the number to the number on the drawer the item came from. And then he uses the visual support to lay out the class cash from the buyer to match the amount owed to check to see if they've paid the correct amount.
